Tayuya

Tayuya (多由也 ^?) is the fourth member of the Sound Four introduced in the series. She was the second member of the Sound Four to be created by Masashi Kishimoto, and was intended to be the only girl in a group of boys.^[2] She uses a flute in battle to control three demonic beasts named "Doki" that she summons to her side during battle. Though primarily meant to perform the physical attacks she avoids, the beasts can also produce ethereal, snake-like creatures that consume an opponent's chakra.^[35] Once her opponents are weakened in this fashion, Tayuya can trap them in illusions she creates with her flute. She attempts to use her many techniques against Shikamaru Nara, but his superior intelligence forces her to rely on brute strength to gain victory.^[36] Though she almost succeeds, Temari arrives to help Shikamaru and creates a windstorm that crushes Tayuya under a pile of debris.^[32] Her seiyū in the Japanese anime is Akeno Watanabe,^[37] and her English voice actor is Kari Wahlgren.^[38]

Sakon and Ukon

Sakon (左近 ^?) and Ukon (右近 ^?) are twin brothers who share the same position in the Sound Four. Sakon was the final character in the Sound Four created by Kishimoto, who initially was unable to decide which character for him to fight. After deciding to have him battle Kiba Inuzuka and Akamaru in a two-on-two battle, Kishimoto created Ukon to complete the matchup.^[2] In battle, Sakon enjoys toying with his opponents, causing him to waste time in battle by using showy techniques. Conversely, Ukon is impatient and likes to end battles quickly. Due to their genetic ability, the brothers can merge their bodies together. Ukon usually resides in Sakon's body, with only his head protruding on Sakon's back.^[29] When Sakon battles an opponent, Ukon can protrude his arms and legs from Sakon's body to increase the strength of his attacks and defend his blindspots.^[30] Both brothers can also merge with an opponent's body, where they can destroy the opponent's cells from within.^[31] Sakon and Ukon manage to overpower Kiba Inuzuka and Akamaru in their battle, but Kankuro arrives and kills Sakon and Ukon.^[32] In the Japanese anime, the seiyū for both brothers is Shunsuke Sakuya,^[33] and their English voice actor is Brian Beacock.^[34]

Kidomaru

Kidomaru (鬼童丸 Kidōmaru^?) is the second member of the Sound Four to be introduced in the series. He was the first member of the Sound Four created by Masashi Kishimoto, with his spider-like traits meant to be main aspects of his character.^[2] As such, Kidomaru possesses six arms, a third eye, and the ability to excrete webs from his mouth. This webbing, a mixture of body fluids and chakra, is as strong as steel and can ensnare anything that comes into contact with it. He can also produce a golden webbing that hardens upon contact with oxygen, allowing him to make armor or weapons.^[24] Kidomaru treats battles as a game and tries to get as much enjoyment from them as possible; when he battles Neji Hyuga, he calls him a "trash character" and looks for weaknesses in Neji's defenses to take advantage of.^[25] Despite being near death, Neji manages to defeat Kidomaru.^[26] In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Susumu Chiba,^[27] and his English voice actor is Peter Lurie.^[28]

Jirobo

Jirobo (次郎坊 Jirōbō^?) is the first member of the Sound Four to be introduced in the series. When Masashi Kishimoto was creating the Sound Four, he was the third member of the group to be created, and was intended to be the largest member of the group.^[2] Jirobo is the physically strongest member: he can lift boulder-sized rocks and hurl them across long distances with ease. He can also absorb others' chakra, which he uses as a form of sustenance.^[19] His fellow Sound Four member Tayuya frequently calls Jirobo fat due to his size and habit of consuming chakra, something he is quick to scold her for.^[20] When Sasuke Uchiha leaves Konohagakure, Jirobo battles Choji Akimichi, and after criticizing Choji for his girth, Choji, after consuming a level three soldier pill, dispatches Jirobo.^[21] In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Kenta Miyake,^[22] and his English voice actor is Michael Sorich.^[23]

The Sound Four

The Sound Four (音隠れの忍四人衆 ,Otogakure no Shinobi Yonin Shū^?, lit. "Hidden Sound Shinobi Four People", English TV: "Sound Ninja Four") are Orochimaru's elite bodyguards. They are introduced during Orochimaru's invasion of Konohagakure, but do not become a prominent part of the story until Sasuke Uchiha attempts to leave Konohagakure to join Otogakure.

The Sound Four act as his bodyguards, and although they are all defeated by Konohagakure ninja, Sasuke manages to escape.^[17] The group was originally known as the "Sound Five", as they were forced to accept Kimimaro as the leader after he defeated the entire group in battle. After Kimimaro became bedridden due to his illness, the group resumed calling themselves the Sound Four.^[18] As a group they specialize in barriers, defensive walls, and sealing techniques.

Orochimaru has given each member of the group one of his cursed seals, which allows him to control them and greatly increases the strengths of the users when active.^[17]

Kabuto Yakushi (薬師カブト ,Yakushi Kabuto^?) is Orochimaru's foremost servant. As a child, he was found on a battlefield by a medical officer from Konohagakure, who took Kabuto and raised him as a son.^[9] Kabuto began acting as a spy for numerous countries and organizations, including the criminal organization Akatsuki, which ordered him to enter the service of Orochimaru.^[10] Kabuto uses his various former affiliations as a means to gather intelligence on Orochimaru's behalf; for instance, he participates in the bi-annual ninja exams as a villager of Konohagakure so as to gather information on his fellow participants.^[9] Although Kabuto has professed his utmost loyalty to Orochimaru, Orochimaru has admitted that he cannot determine where Kabuto's true loyalties lie, and has suggested that Kabuto secretly works against him.^[11]

Kabuto is highly proficient with medical techniques, being likened in ability to Tsunade: he can regenerate from wounds by reactivating dead cells in order to grow new ones and can form a scalpel with chakra to deal precise blows to his opponents.^[12] Orochimaru uses Kabuto's talents in his human experiments, primarily to keep test subjects alive for longer than is normally feasible.^[13] During Part I, he infiltrates Konohagakure to prepare for Orochimaru's invasion, and rejoins Orochimaru in Otogakure following the invasion. In Part II, after Orochimaru is killed, Kabuto integrates Orochimaru's remains into his body in order to become powerful enough to not serve anyone again. Orochimaru's remains have gradually begun to take over his body, but Kabuto expresses desire to kill Sasuke Uchiha, and afterwards fight Naruto Uzumaki once he has learned to control the remains. ^[14] In the Japanese anime, Kabuto's seiyū is Nobutoshi Canna,^[15] and his English voice actor is Henry Dittman.^[16]

Orochimaru (大蛇丸 ^?) is one of the primary antagonists of the Naruto series. To emphasize his role as a villain, Kishimoto worked towards making him appear "pasty and sickly" as part of his theme of distinguishing villains from the protagonists.^[2] In the series, Orochimaru is a former ninja of Konohagakure and a student of the Third Hokage. During his time in the village, he distinguished himself as one of the village's most powerful ninja along with his teammates, Jiraiya and Tsunade.^[3] His desire to obtain immortality led him to conduct experiments on other Konohagakure ninja, and he eventually fled the village and joined the criminal organization Akatsuki.^[4] After an incident with Itachi Uchiha, he left Akatsuki and established his own ninja village, Otogakure, in the hopes of destroying his former home.^[5] His immortality technique involves transferring his consciousness between different host bodies, and his desire for a new host, particularly Sasuke Uchiha, is one of his driving motivations throughout the series.^[6] Because of his different host bodies and the disguises he assumes, a panoply of voice actors are utilized for Orochimaru; his most common seiyū in the Japanese anime is Kujira, and the corresponding English voice actor is Steven Blum.^[7]^[8]

Yamato

Yamato (ヤマト ^?) is introduced during Part II of the series as a temporary replacement for Kakashi Hatake as the leader of Team 7.^[12] After Kakashi's return, he stays on the team in an additional leadership position. Though "Yamato" is a codename assigned to him for the purposes of joining Team 7, he prefers it over his real name, Tenzo (テンゾウ ,Tenzō^?).^[91] During his infancy, Yamato was abducted by Orochimaru and experimented upon in an attempt to replicate the First Hokage's unique abilities. Orochimaru was forced to flee Konohagakure before he could complete his testing, and thus never knew that Yamato had successfully obtained the First's Mokuton techniques.^[168] When using Mokuton techniques, Yamato can form anything out of wood at will, and is not above using this ability for making creature comforts like two-story houses to "camp out" in.^[165] Mokuton also allows Yamato to suppress a tailed beast's influence over its host. This is the primary reason he is assigned to Team 7, as he can stop Naruto Uzumaki if the nine-tailed demon fox within him gets out of control.^[168] In the Naruto: Shippūden anime, Yamato's seiyū is Rikiya Koyama.^[169]

Sai

Sai (サイ ^?) is introduced during Part II of the series as Sasuke Uchiha's replacement in Team 7.^[12] Having been a member of Root since he was a child, Sai has been trained to not possess or desire any type of emotion or camaraderie. After spending time with Naruto Uzumaki, however, he begins to crave bonds with other people, which has since become his primary role in the series.^[163] Sai's attempts to form bonds involve giving pet names to others; however, he often says what he actually thinks of a person, resulting with him choosing names such as "fatso" and "ugly". He eventually learns from his mistakes and attempts the opposite approach, for instance, calling Ino Yamanaka "Ms. Beautiful".^[164] When not making an attempt to bond with others, Sai spends his time painting and drawing, and has produced thousands of works.^[165] His artistic talents extend to his choice of attacks in battles: anything he paints on a scroll that he carries with him, most commonly animals, comes to life.^[166] Sai's seiyū is Satoshi Hino in the Naruto: Shippūden anime.^[167]

Chiyo

Chiyo (チヨ ^?) is an adviser to Sunagakure who is introduced at the start of Part II. She is mistrustful of other ninja villages, making treaties as a formality and quietly strengthening Sunagakure's military might simultaneously. During the various ninja wars, she used her knowledge of poisons to aid Sunagakure, only to have many of her efforts nullified by the work of Tsunade. She is a skilled puppeteer and taught her grandson, Sasori, everything she knew. When Sasori kidnaps Gaara, the leader of Sunagakure, in Part II, Chiyo joins a group of Konohagakure ninja in rescuing him. With the help of Sakura Haruno, the apprentice of Tsunade, Chiyo is able to kill her grandson. Despite their efforts, Gaara also dies before they can rescue him.^[160] Touched by the genuine bond formed between Sunagakure and Konoha, Chiyo gives up her life to revive Gaara, hoping that the relationship of peace might be continued.^[161] In the Japanese anime, her seiyū is Ikuko Tani.^[162]

Shizune

Shizune (シズネ ^?) is a Konohagakure ninja introduced in the series as Tsunade's assistant. She left Konohagakure with Tsunade after the death of her uncle, and over the years, Tsunade taught her medical techniques. Despite her medicinal affinity, many of the attacks she uses in the series are poison-based, including using concealed poisoned needles or emitting toxic gas from her mouth.^[158] Shizune is one of the few characters that Tsunade trusts with absolute certainty, as she identifies details that Tsunade tends to overlook. In Part II of the series, Shizune's concern for details causes her to question Tsunade's judgment, creating interference with Tsunade's plans and temporarily straining the relationship between the two.^[49] She later investigates Pain, the leader of Akatsuki, but he captures her and removes her soul before she can tell Tsunade of her findings. In the Japanese anime, her seiyū is Keiko Nemoto, and her English voice actor is Megan Hollingshead.^[106]^[159]

Jiraiya

Jiraiya (自来也 ^?) is a Konohagakure ninja and one of Naruto's teachers. Kishimoto has commented that out of all the master-pupil relationships he has created in the Naruto series, the bond between Naruto and Jiraiya is his favorite, noting that it makes drawing them "worthwhile".^[116] As a child, Jiraiya was under the tutelage of the Third Hokage, along with his teammates, Tsunade and Orochimaru.^[33] Jiraiya is known throughout the Naruto world as the "Toad Sage" (蝦蟇仙人 ,Gama Sennin^?) due to his toad-related jutsu. Although still affiliated with Konohagakure, he spends much of his time traveling. Jiraiya's personality is openly lecherous, and he proudly describes himself as a "super pervert", authoring a series of best-selling adult romance novels. During Part I, he takes Naruto as his student, and returns him to Konohagakure in Part II as he begins to keep tabs on the movements of the criminal organization Akatsuki.^[154]^[155] In the Japanese anime, Jiraiya is voiced by Hōchū Ōtsuka, and his English voice actor is David Lodge.^[156]^[157]

Gaara

Gaara (我愛羅 ^?) is the youngest of the three siblings. He was created by Kishimoto as a foil to Naruto Uzumaki, with a similar background yet a highly divergent personality.^[9] When Gaara was born, his father intended to make him a military weapon for Sunagakure by sealing the One-Tailed Shukaku (一尾の守鶴 ,Ichibi no Shukaku^?), a powerful and dangerous tailed beast, inside him. Similar to Naruto, Gaara was tormented by his fellow villagers for being the host of a tailed beast.^[134] After one of his few remaining relatives tried to kill him, Gaara developed a sadistic and withdrawn personality, killing others to affirm the value of his existence.^[135] His battle with Naruto during the invasion of Konoha changes this mentality; as a result, he becomes more willing to help others as the purpose for his existence, and he assumes his deceased father's position as Sunagakure's Kazekage during Part II.^[136] Gaara's seiyū in the Japanese anime is Akira Ishida, and his English voice actor is Liam O'Brien.^[137]^[138]

The Sand Siblings are ninja from the Sunagakure village, and the children of the Fourth Kazekage, the leader of the village.^[132] They come to Konohagakure to participate in the biannual ninja exams, and serve as antagonists in the subsequent invasion of Konohagakure. Due to their interactions with Naruto Uzumaki, they later return as allies of Konohagakure, aiding him in his attempts to retrieve Sasuke Uchiha from Orochimaru's ninja. Kishimoto changed their costumes for their return due to the difficulty in drawing their original attire, as well as to symbolize their new friendship with Konohagakure.^[133]

Tsunade

Tsunade (綱手 ^?), as well as her former teammates Jiraiya and Orochimaru, is a former student of the Third Hokage.^[33] She is also the granddaughter of the First Hokage and grand niece to the Second Hokage, and so many characters in the series refer to her with the Japanese honorific "hime" (meaning "princess"). Despite her connections to past Hokage, Tsunade hates the position when she is first introduced. After her brother and boyfriend died in pursuit of their dreams to become Hokage, she lost faith in the title and the concept of dreams. She regains her faith in both after meeting Naruto Uzumaki, who consistently overcomes any obstacle in his own dreams of being Hokage.^[53] As a result, Tsunade accepts the position of Fifth Hokage (五代目火影 ,Godaime Hokage^?) to protect Konohagakure.^[128] Despite the importance of her position, Tsunade tends to avoid her duties, instead leaving them for her assistants. She will fulfill her role to address matters important to the village, and throughout Part II leads Konoha in combating Akatsuki.^[36]

Tsunade possesses a number of traits that set her apart from other characters in the series, such as being a compulsive gambler with terrible luck. On the rare occasions that she hits a winning streak she perceives it as a bad omen, and makes it a point to fortify her defenses or assist her allies when it occurs. Additionally, although she is in her fifties, she constantly assumes the appearance of a twenty-year-old woman, retaining only her characteristically big breasts.^[129] Despite her odd personality Tsunade is a talented ninja; she has superhuman strength that allows her to reduce buildings to rubble and can heal injuries that most others would consider incurable. Her healing abilities are such that she has devised a method of regeneration for herself, making her all but invincible in battle.^[128] At the conclusion of Part I, Tsunade takes Sakura Haruno as an apprentice, teaching her how to use both of her trademark abilities. In the Japanese anime, Tsunade's seiyū is Masako Katsuki, and her English voice actor is Debi Mae West.^[130]^[131]

Minato Namikaze

Minato Namikaze (波風ミナト ,Namikaze Minato^?), the Fourth Hokage (四代目火影 ,Yondaime Hokage^?), is the father of Naruto Uzumaki. Although Naruto and Minato are noted to have a number of similar traits throughout the series, their familial relationship is not revealed until Part II of the series.^[126] He was the student of Jiraiya and the teacher of Kakashi Hatake. Minato was a prodigy among ninja, such that enemy villages issued flee-on-sight orders if ever he appeared on a battlefield. He developed a jutsu that was in essence a teleportation jutsu, allowing him to wipe out whole armies in the blink of an eye, thus earning him the title of "Konoha's Yellow Flash" (木ノ葉の黄色い閃光 ,Konoha no Kiiroi Senkō^?).^[127] Before the start of the series, he gave his life to seal the nine-tailed demon fox into Naruto's body, saving Konoha from destruction and giving Naruto access to its great strength.^[122]

Hiruzen Sarutobi

Hiruzen Sarutobi (猿飛ヒルゼン ,Sarutobi Hiruzen^?), the Third Hokage (三代目火影 ,Sandaime Hokage^?), was the longest-ruling Hokage, having abdicated his position to the Fourth Hokage and subsequently reclaiming it after the Fourth's death.^[121] He is a peace-loving leader, preferring nonviolent discussions to his advisers' more militaristic suggestions. Throughout the series, he acts as a source of wisdom to younger generations and is one of the few characters to treat Naruto Uzumaki as a person and not just the container of the nine-tailed demon fox. In his youth the Third was known as "The Professor" (プロフェッサー ,Purofessā^?), as he purportedly knew every jutsu in Konohagakure. He was also the teacher of Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. Orochimaru had always been his favorite student, and the Third could never bring himself to recognize Orochimaru's evil qualities. When Orochimaru invades Konoha years later, the Third fights him to repent for never prosecuting Orochimaru as he should have.^[123] When he is unable to win, the Third robs Orochimaru of his ability to use jutsu, bringing an end to the invasion and thus allowing him to die happy.^[72] In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Hidekatsu Shibata, and his English voice actor is Steve Kramer.^[124]^[125]

Hokage

The First Hokage (初代火影 ,Shodai Hokage^?) was Hashirama Senju (千手柱間 ,Senju Hashirama^?), who founded the village along with Madara Uchiha. With his unique Mokuton abilities, he created the trees that act as the foundation for Konohagakure, and his method of rule became a model for all subsequent Hokage. The First was succeeded by his younger brother, Tobirama Senju (千手扉間 ,Senju Tobirama^?), who became the Second Hokage (二代目火影 ,Nidaime Hokage^?).^[121] He in turn was followed by one of his students, who became the Third Hokage.

After a long rule, the Third abdicated in favor of Minato Namikaze, who took the position of Fourth Hokage, but reclaimed his position after the Fourth gave his life to save the village from the nine-tailed demon fox.^[122] The Third is the Hokage at the beginning of the series, but he sacrifices himself to stop his former student Orochimaru, during an invasion of Konohagakure by Sunagakure and Otogakure.^[72] Another of his students, Tsunade, succeeds him as the Fifth Hokage.^[53]

Might Guy (マイト・ガイ ,Maito Gai^?) is the leader of Team Guy, and dedicates most of his time to only one of his students, Rock Lee. Because of Guy's dedication to him, Lee has modeled himself in his master's image, mimicking Guy's distinctive green jumpsuit and shiny bowl haircut.^[114] Lee has also adopted many of Guy's mannerisms and his philosophy, including his "My Rules" philosophy, which involves setting tough self-imposed penalties for failure in the belief that the punishment will make him stronger.^[115] Series creator Masashi Kishimoto likens Guy's passionate personality to that of a gym teacher he had in junior high school, but notes that the teacher was not a model for Guy's character.^[116]

In battle, Guy specializes in physical attacks, which he constantly tries to teach to Lee.^[98] While Lee is forced to concentrate on physical attacks due to his inability to use other types of techniques, Guy deliberately chooses not to use techniques other than physical attacks.^[117] When not teaching Lee a new ability, Guy is usually found in competition with his self-proclaimed rival, Kakashi Hatake. Throughout the series, Kakashi has never displayed a particular interest in their rivalry, which only further motivates Guy to defeat Kakashi and his "coolness".^[118] In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Masashi Ebara, and his English voice actor is Skip Stellrecht.^[119]^[120]

Kurenai Yuhi (夕日紅 ,Yūhi Kurenai^?) is the leader of Team 8. Of all her students, Kurenai is closest with Hinata, acting as a surrogate parent in the absence of Hinata's father, and helping Hinata overcome her weaknesses.^[60] Whenever Kurenai appears in the series, she is regularly accompanied by Asuma Sarutobi. Because of this, many other characters assume them to be a couple, though they both deny this.^[66] During Part II of the series, Kurenai is revealed to be pregnant with Asuma's child, making their relationship clear.^[67] In battle she specializes in casting illusions, and is shown to be particularly skilled with illusions involving plants.^[68] In the Japanese anime, her seiyū is Rumi Ochiai.^[69] In the English adaptation of the anime, she was voiced by Saffron Henderson in episode three, and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn in all subsequent appearances.^[70]^[71]

Hinata Hyuga (日向ヒナタ ,Hyūga Hinata^?) is a member of Team 8 who suffers from a lack of self-confidence throughout the series. She is always reluctant to speak her mind or to do something that might antagonize another character, causing her difficulties whenever she is on a mission.^[59] This results in her effective expulsion from her clan even though she is the eldest daughter of the Hyuga clan's leader and the heiress to the clan. Hinata's inability to stand up for herself caused her father to disown her at a young age, leaving her in the care of her teacher, Kurenai Yuhi.^[60] Masashi Kishimoto had originally intended Hinata to be a regular member of the Hyuga clan but instead made her a ninja.^[61] Soon after her introduction, Hinata begins training to become stronger, both to overcome her own weaknesses and to prove her worth to her father. Her efforts begin to prove successful towards the end of Part I, as her father takes a greater interest in her training.^[36]

Though Hinata's training has in large part been to prove herself, she also trains to try and win the attention of series protagonist Naruto Uzumaki. Inspired by Naruto's confidence and determination, Hinata becomes infatuated with Naruto, to the extent that she immediately blushes or faints upon seeing him. However, as the series progresses, she goes out of her way to help him.^[59] While Hinata is hesitant to openly admit her feelings for him, most characters (except for Naruto, who just seems to assume she exhibits "weird" behavior all the time) are aware of her feelings.^[62] In the anime, Hinata's attempts to impress Naruto result in her creation of a new ability capable of instantly blocking or attacking anything in her extended field of vision.^[63] Hinata eventually confesses her love to Naruto, shortly before attacking Pain. Her seiyū in the Japanese anime is Nana Mizuki, and her English voice actor is Stephanie Sheh.^[64]^[65]

Tenten

Tenten (テンテン ^?) is the only female member of Team Guy, and firmly belives that female ninja are just as skilled as male ninja. Of all the Naruto protagonists, Tenten receives the least amount of screen time, such that her only fight in Part I of the manga is almost entirely skipped; the battle's start and her eventual defeat are the only portions shown.^[84] Despite her lack of appearances, series creator Masashi Kishimoto favors her design more than those of any of the other female characters he has created, and plans to use her more.^[109] In battle, Tenten specializes in weaponry, ranging from projectiles to close-combat weapons and even explosives by the second part of the series.^[110] During a fight, she can overwhelm opponents by summoning hundreds of weapons and bombarding them with pinpoint accuracy. Tenten uses this expertise to help Neji Hyuga train his defensive techniques, and she holds him in high regard since he can always block her attacks.^[111] Her Japanese seiyū is Yukari Tamura, and her English voice actor is Danielle Judovits.^[112]^[113]

Neji Hyuga (日向ネジ ,Hyūga Neji^?) is a member of Team Guy and a child prodigy of the Hyuga clan. Despite his natural talent, Neji's membership in one of the clan's lower houses leaves him ineligible to learn the clan's most secret techniques.^[101] At the start of the series, Neji openly hates the main house because of this, readily attacking its members verbally or physically when given the chance. At this point in the series, Neji believes in a fatalistic philosophy: that one's destiny is inescapable and that a weak person will always be weak.^[60] After being defeated in battle by Naruto Uzumaki, a character that has proven his "destiny" wrong by getting stronger, Neji has a change of heart.^[102] He abandons the idea of a predetermined fate, and resolves to get strong enough to never lose a battle.^[103] He also tries to remedy the estranged relations between himself and the members of the main house, resulting in his training with the leader of the main house at the end of Part I.^[36]

Neji displays his title as a prodigy of the Hyuga throughout the series; when first introduced, he is highly proficient with the Gentle Fist style of combat, with which he can directly attack an opponent's internal systems.^[104] Though never having been trained in the form, Neji has been able to replicate it and its most powerful attacks through simple observation.^[101] As the series progresses, Neji refines these abilities into more powerful counterparts, either to increase their potency or to fix an inherent flaw.^[103] One such example is his Byakugan, an eye technique that by default grants the owner a near-360-degree field of vision within a fifty meter radius. Rock Lee (ロック・リー ,Rokku Rī^?) is a member of Team Guy and the favorite student of team leader Might Guy. Guy spends much of his free time training with Lee to help him accomplish his dream of becoming a respected ninja by using only taijutsu. Lee has adopted several of Guy's habits, including his perseverance.^[97] Guy has taught him a number of powerful, even forbidden, techniques. Because some of these techniques, such as the ability to open the eight chakra gates, can pose a severe risk to Lee's body, he is only permitted to use them to protect something or someone dear to him.^[98] In the Japanese anime and manga, he always utilizes honorifics such as "san and "kun". In the English adaptations, he never uses contractions. In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Yoichi Masukawa, and his voice actor is Brian Donovan in English.^[99]^[100]

Team Guy is a group of Konohagakure ninja led by Might Guy. The members of Team Guy primarily concentrate on physical attacks and weapons due to Guy's influence. They are a year older than the other Konohagakure teams' members, as Guy wanted to wait a year before they could take the test to advance in ninja rank and become chunin. In Part II, Team Guy joins Team 7 in attempting to save Gaara from the criminal organization, Akatsuki.^[96]

Asuma Sarutobi (猿飛アスマ ,Sarutobi Asuma^?) is the leader of Team 10 and son of the Third Hokage. He had a falling out with his father when he was younger, and briefly left Konohagakure in protest. The two had not completely reconciled by the time of the Third's death.^[88] Asuma is usually seen smoking a cigarette, but will temporarily drop the habit when something is bothering him, such as when his father died.^[89] Among all his students, Asuma shares a particularly close relationship with Shikamaru Nara, and the two frequently play shogi or go together.^[79] Asuma frequently appears alongside Kurenai Yuhi, leading many characters to assume the two are a couple. Both deny this and promptly try to change the subject whenever it is brought up.

Ino Yamanaka (山中いの ,Yamanaka Ino^?) is the only female member of Team 10. She has known Sakura Haruno since they were children, befriending and helping her to develop her own identity. When they discovered that they both liked Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura ended their friendship so they could properly compete for his affection.^[83] The two eventually make amends and rekindle their friendship, but still maintain a competitive attitude towards each other.^[84] In the anime, when Sakura begins to excel in healing techniques, Ino becomes her surrogate apprentice, hoping to be more useful to her friends and teammates as an able medical ninja.^[85] In terms of combat abilities, Ino specializes in mind-altering techniques. Shikamaru Nara (奈良シカマル ,Nara Shikamaru^?) is one of the members of Team 10. Creator Kishimoto has noted that he "likes" Shikamaru due to his easygoing nature despite being a genius, and contrasted him against Sasuke Uchiha's intelligent but abrasive personality.^[7] Shikamaru's intelligence is such that Asuma Sarutobi, Team 10's leader, has never been able to defeat Shikamaru at games such as shogi or go, and he can devise complex strategies even in the heat of battle. However, his laziness frequently prevents him from applying his intelligence.

^[79] Shikamaru is a longtime friend of Choji Akimichi, his fellow Team 10 member, as he chooses to look upon Choji as a person rather than only considering his large girth.^[75] In battle, Shikamaru can manipulate his shadow, and by extending it into another person's shadow he can force the target to mimic his movements. Choji Akimichi (秋道チョウジ ,Akimichi Chōji^?) is a member of Team 10 who is typified by his deep love for food to the extent that he continually has a snack with him during the series. Though his habit of always eating gives him a relatively large appearance, Choji insists he is not fat, instead using explanations like being "big-boned". If someone refers to him as fat, Choji instantly becomes hostile and increases his resolve to battle.

Team 10 is a group of Konohagakure ninja led by Asuma Sarutobi. The fathers of the three team members Choji Akimichi, Shikamaru Nara, and Ino Yamanaka were also on a team together, and both generations refer to their team using the moniker "Ino-Shika-Cho".

In the Naruto world, countries operate as separate political entities ruled by landlords. Within these countries are hidden villages (éš ã‚Œé‡Œ ,kakurezato^?), settlements housing ninja, warriors capable of using supernatural abilities in combat. A hidden village maintains the economy of the parent country by training ninja from a young age and using them to perform missions for other countries. The ninja of a hidden village also serve as the military force of their parent country. The leaders of the hidden villages hold equal status with the leaders of their respective countries. Five countries in the Naruto world: the Land of Earth, the Land of Fire, Land of Lightning, the Land of Water, and the Land of Wind are known as the "Five Great Shinobi Nations". These countries are the most powerful in the Naruto world. They are ruled by a feudal lord and the leaders of the hidden villages in these countries hold the title of Kage. Other apparently smaller nations have been named in passing, in either the manga or anime, but are yet to be explored.

Land of Fire

The Land of Fire (ç«ã®å›½ Hi no Kuni^?) is one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations, and contains the hidden village of Konohagakure, where the majority of the Naruto series takes place. Per its namesake, the Land of Fire is oriented towards the element of fire, with bright and warm weather.

Konohagakure (æœ¨ãƒŽè‘‰éš ã‚Œã®é‡Œ ,Konohagakure no Sato^?, lit. "Village Hidden Among Tree Leaves" VIZ "Hidden Leaf Village"), also known as Konoha, is the hidden village within the Land of Fire and the primary setting of the series. As the hidden village of one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations, the village is led by a Kage, known as the Hokage. The faces of all Hokage are engraved on the rock formation overlooking Konohagakure. At the start of the series, the Third Hokage is the leader of the village. He had abdicated his position in favor of Minato Namikaze, who became the Fourth Hokage, but was forced to reclaim his position after Minato died saving the village from the nine-tailed demon fox. During Part I of the series, Orochimaru leads an invasion of Konohagakure that causes large amounts of property damage to the village and culminates with the murder of the Third Hokage, his former teacher. Tsunade, another of Third's students, succeeds him as the Fifth Hokage and oversees the village's reconstruction. The origin of Konohagakure is revealed during Part II of the series. The village was formed as part of an alliance between the Uchiha and Senju clans, the strongest clans in the Naruto world at that time. Hashirama Senju, the leader of the Senju clan, became the First Hokage, and defeated Madara Uchiha, the leader of the Uchiha clan, when Madara challenged Hashirama's rule. Later in Part II Pain, the leader of the criminal organization Akatsuki, leads an attack on Konohagakure and destroys the village once his business is done.

Within Konohagakure are a number of locations featured prominently during the series. The Forest of Death (æ»ã®æ£® ,Shi no Mori^?) is a large gated forest used for the yearly ninja exams in which ninja can advance to the rank of Chunin. The Ichiraku Ramen Bar is the favorite restaurant of the series' titular character, Naruto Uzumaki, and he frequently visits it during the course of the series. The Valley of the End (çµ‚æœ«ã®è°· ,ShÅ«matsu no Tani^?) is the location of Hashirama's and Madara's fight for control over the village, featuring large statues of the two overlooking a waterfall. At the end of Part I, Naruto fights Sasuke Uchiha in this location in a failed attempt to return him to Konohagakure.

Land of Wind

The Land of Wind (é¢¨ã®å›½ ,Kaze no Kuni^?), one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations, is a large, dry, and desolate country whose cities are found near water sources. While much of the country is inhospitable, the population is large and prosperous due to frequent trade with the Land of Fire. The hidden village in the Land of Wind is Sunagakure.

Amegakure (é›¨éš ã‚Œã®é‡Œ ,Amegakure no Sato^?, lit. "Village Hidden in Rain") is situated in an unnamed country. The country's borders are highly defended, and those wishing to pass through it are subject to constant surveillance for the duration of their stay. As it is situated between three of the Five Great Shinobi Nations, it serves as a battlefield for their wars, and most of the population consists of war refugees. Amegakure itself was the site of a civil war, and Hanzo, the leader of Amegakure, was killed by Pain, the leader of the criminal organization Akatsuki. Following the war, Pain becomes the leader of the village and uses it as a base for Akatsuki. Ninja loyal to the former Amegakure frequently attempt to assassinate Pain, but their efforts are unsuccessful. The inhabitants of Amegakure consider Pain to be a god, and he never reveals himself to the populace.

The Land of Water (æ°´ã®å›½ Mizu no Kuni^?) is one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations and contains the hidden village of Kirigakure. It is composed of many islands, with each having its own unique traditions. The Land of Water and Kirigakure are never shown in the series, but several ninja featured in the series hail from this area.

Kirigakure (éœ§éš ã‚Œã®é‡Œ ,Kirigakure no Sato^?, lit. "Village Hidden in Mist") is the hidden village of the Land of Water. The leader of the village is known as the Mizukage. Madara Uchiha has been referred to as the Mizukage, though it is unclear when he held the title. The ninja in Kirigakure specialize in water-based jutsu. Kirigakure once used brutal methods to train its ninja, requiring prospective ninja to fight their comrades to the death. After Zabuza Momochi killed all the students in his class, however, the process was discontinued. Zabuza became part of the Seven Shinobi Swordsmen of the Mist, the strongest group of ninja in the village and signified by the unique swords they carry. Aside from Zabuza, two other members have been revealed in the series: Kisame Hoshigaki, who abandoned the village and joined the criminal organization Akatsuki, and Raiga Kurosuki, who is introduced towards the end of the Naruto anime.

Land of Lightning

The Land of Lightning (é›·ã®å›½ Kaminari no Kuni^?) is one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations and contains the hidden village of Kumogakure. It is composed of numerous mountain ranges. The country and its inhabitants go largely unseen until late in the second half of the series.

Kumogakure (é›²éš ã‚Œã®é‡Œ ,Kumogakure no sato^?, lit. "Village Hidden in the Clouds") is the hidden village of the Land of Lightning. It is located on a high mountain, literally hidden in the clouds. The leader of the village is known as the Raikage. Similar to Iwagakure, Kumogakure has had two tailed beasts in its possession: the two-tailed demon cat, sealed within Yugito Nii (äºŒä½ ãƒ¦ã‚®ãƒˆ ,Nii Yugito^?), and the eight-tailed beast, sealed within the Raikage's brother, Killer Bee (ã‚ãƒ©ãƒ¼ãƒ“ãƒ¼ ,KirÄbÄ«^?). Both JinchÅ«riki were attacked by Akatsuki. Yugito was captured and killed through the extraction process, while Killer Bee managed to fool and evade capture by his Akatsuki assailants.

Land of Earth

The Land of Earth (åœŸã®å›½ Tsuchi no Kuni^?) is one the Five Great Shinobi Nations and contains the village of Iwagakure (å²©éš ã‚Œã®é‡Œ Iwagakure no sato^?, lit. "Village Hidden Among the Rocks"). Not much is known of this land as it has mainly been mentioned in passing in the manga. Like Kumogakure, it has been revealed that Iwagakure had two tailed beasts in its possession: the four-tailed beast, sealed within an old man named RÅshi, and the five-tailed beast, sealed within an unnamed shinobi.

Land of Waves

The Land of Waves (æ³¢ã®å›½ Nami no Kuni^?) is a poor nation, and does not have a hidden village as a result. It is an isolated island, but was prosperous until the country was taken over by Gato, who monopolized the economy. The Land of Waves is introduced early in Part I, and Team 7, which consists of the main characters of the series, travels to the Land of Waves as bodyguards for a bridge builder. With the aid of the populace of the Land of Waves, Team 7 manage to defeat Gato and his hired assassin Zabuza Momochi, and his assistant Haku, and restore the country to its former status. As a sign of gratitude, the bridge is named the "Great Naruto Bridge" (ãƒŠãƒ«ãƒˆå¤§æ©‹ Naruto ÅŒhashi^?) in honor of Naruto Uzumaki, the main character of the series.

The nine-tailed demon fox (九尾の妖狐, Kyūbi no Yōko^?) is the most powerful of the tailed beasts. It is regarded as an age-old natural disaster, as a single swipe of one of its tails can raise tsunamis and flatten mountains. Twelve years before the start of the series, the fox attacked Konohagakure. Its attack was stopped by the Fourth Hokage, who gave his life to seal the fox into his son, Naruto Uzumaki.

^[122] Throughout the series, Naruto tries to gain dominance over the fox, as harnessing its great strength allows him to perform jutsu that would normally be impossible for a ninja of his level.^[144] At the same time the fox tries to gain control over Naruto, provoking his rage and thus allowing its violent personality to influence and consume him. She is mistrustful of other ninja villages, making treaties as a formality and quietly strengthening Sunagakure's military might simultaneously. During the various ninja wars, she used her knowledge of poisons to aid Sunagakure, only to have many of her efforts nullified by the work of Tsunade. She is a skilled puppeteer and taught her grandson, Sasori, everything she knew. When Sasori kidnaps Gaara, the leader of Sunagakure, in Part II, Chiyo joins a group of Konohagakure ninja in rescuing him. With the help of Sakura Haruno, the apprentice of Tsunade, Chiyo is able to kill her grandson. Despite their efforts, Gaara also dies before they can rescue him.^[160] Touched by the genuine bond formed between Sunagakure and Konoha, Chiyo gives up her life to revive Gaara, hoping that the relationship of peace might be continued.^[161] In the Japanese anime, her seiyū is Ikuko Tani.^[162]

Kishimoto has commented that out of all the master-pupil relationships he has created in the Naruto series, the bond between Naruto and Jiraiya is his favorite, noting that it makes drawing them "worthwhile".^[116] As a child, Jiraiya was under the tutelage of the Third Hokage, along with his teammates, Tsunade and Orochimaru.^[33] Jiraiya is known throughout the Naruto world as the "Toad Sage" (蝦蟇仙人, Gama Sennin^?) due to his toad-related jutsu. Although still affiliated with Konohagakure, he spends much of his time traveling. Jiraiya's personality is openly lecherous, and he proudly describes himself as a "super pervert", authoring a series of best-selling adult romance novels. Konohamaru Sarutobi (猿飛木ノ葉丸^?), named after Konohagakure, is the grandson of the Third Hokage. He strives to replace his grandfather as Hokage so the villagers of Konohagakure will recognize him by name, not as the Hokage's grandson. He looks to Naruto Uzumaki as a mentor in this quest, emulating his work ethic, determination, and signature jutsu such as the Rasengan and a variety of perverted techniques. Konohamaru insists, however, that he will only become Hokage after Naruto has been Hokage first.

^[13] Konohamaru's design caused great difficulties for Masashi Kishimoto; he intended for Konohamaru to look like a "punk" smaller than Naruto, yet all of his attempts resulted in a mere recreation of Naruto. Iruka Umino (うみのイルカ, Umino Iruka^?) is a Konohagakure ninja and instructor at the Ninja Academy, a school for prospective ninja. Masashi Kishimoto's initial design of Iruka featured "evil" eyes and sharper cheekbones, but this was abandoned in favor of a more relaxed appearance.^[148] When Iruka was a child, his parents were killed by the nine-tailed demon fox, which was sealed into Naruto Uzumaki.

He bears no ill will towards Naruto, instead being one of the few people at the start of the series to recognize Naruto as a person and not just a container for the fox. Gaara

Gaara (我愛羅^?) is the youngest of the three siblings. He was created by Kishimoto as a foil to Naruto Uzumaki, with a similar background yet a highly divergent personality.^[9] When Gaara was born, his father intended to make him a military weapon for Sunagakure by sealing the One-Tailed Shukaku (一尾の守鶴 Ichibi no Shukaku^?), a powerful and dangerous tailed beast, inside him. Similar to Naruto, Gaara was tormented by his fellow villagers for being the host of a tailed beast.^[134] After one of his few remaining relatives tried to kill him, Gaara developed a sadistic and withdrawn personality, killing others to affirm the value of his existence.^[135] His battle with Naruto during the invasion of Konoha changes this mentality; as a result, he becomes more willing to help others as the purpose for his existence, and he assumes his deceased father's position as Sunagakure's Kazekage during Part II.^[136] Gaara's seiyū in the Japanese anime is Akira Ishida, and his English voice actor is Liam O'Brien.^[137]^[138]

Kankuro

Kankuro (カンクロウ Kankurō^?) is the second oldest of the three siblings. For the first half of the series, he is frequently at odds with Gaara, though he tends to hold his tongue for fear of being killed.^[139] In Part II, once Gaara begins to reveal his dreams and motivations to Kankuro, Kankuro becomes very protective of Gaara; he lashes out at anyone who speaks poorly of Gaara and when Gaara is kidnapped, he readily risks his life to save him.^[136] Kankuro is a talented puppeteer, and has thus far been shown to have three puppets in his arsenal: Karasu (烏^?, lit. Crow), Kuroari (黒蟻^?, lit. Black Ant), and Sanshōuo (山椒魚^?, lit. Salamander). Karasu is used for offensive purposes, Kuroari traps opponents in its body to make them easier targets, and Sanshōuo protects Kankuro and his allies from enemy attacks.^[140] The puppets are all destroyed by their original creator, Sasori, in Part II, and it has yet to be seen whether Kankuro has repaired them.^[141] In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Yasuyuki Kase, and his English voice actor is Michael Lindsay.^[142]^[143]

Temari

Temari (テマリ^?) is the oldest of the three siblings. Unlike her more combat-loving brothers, Temari values peace, as she questions Sunagakure's justifications for going to war with Konohagakure.^[144] This trait carries over to Part II, in which she begins acting as a liaison between Sunagakure and Konohagakure to help the two villages work together. Like her brothers, Temari does not appear in the series very often, and when she does appear she is commonly in the company of Shikamaru Nara. When they make their Part II debut together, Naruto Uzumaki asks if they are on a date, though both Shikamaru and Temari state that this is not the case.^[145] In battle, Temari wields a giant iron fan that can create powerful gusts of wind capable of leveling the surrounding landscape. As she is skilled at deducing an opponent's strategies and weaknesses soon after a battle begins, she typically uses her winds to remove parts of the battlefield that might be advantageous to the enemies.^[79] Temari's seiyū in the Japanese anime is Romi Paku, and her English voice actor is Tara Platt

Hokage

The Hokage (火影^?, lit. "Fire Shadow") is the leader of Konohagakure. Over the course of the series, there have been five Hokage, who are honored by the village by having sculptures of their faces carved into the rock formation overlooking Konohagakure. The First Hokage (初代火影, Shodai Hokage^?) was Hashirama Senju (千手柱間, Senju Hashirama^?), who founded the village along with Madara Uchiha. With his unique Mokuton abilities, he created the trees that act as the foundation for Konohagakure, and his method of rule became a model for all subsequent Hokage. The First was succeeded by his younger brother, Tobirama Senju (千手扉間, Senju Tobirama^?), who became the Second Hokage (二代目火影, Nidaime Hokage^?).^[121] He in turn was followed by one of his students, who became the Third Hokage. After a long rule, the Third abdicated in favor of Minato Namikaze, who took the position of Fourth Hokage, but reclaimed his position after the Fourth gave his life to save the village from the nine-tailed demon fox.^[122] The Third is the Hokage at the beginning of the series, but he is slain in battle by his former student, Orochimaru, during an invasion of Konohagakure by Sunagakure and Otogakure.^[72] Another of his students, Tsunade, succeeds him as the Fifth Hokage.^[53]

Hiruzen Sarutobi

Hiruzen Sarutobi (猿飛ヒルゼン, Sarutobi Hiruzen^?), the Third Hokage (三代目火影, Sandaime Hokage^?), was the longest-ruling Hokage, having abdicated his position to the Fourth Hokage and subsequently reclaiming it after the Fourth's death.^[121] He is a peace-loving leader, preferring nonviolent discussions to his advisers' more militaristic suggestions. Throughout the series, he acts as a source of wisdom to younger generations and is one of the few characters to treat Naruto Uzumaki as a person and not just the container of the nine-tailed demon fox. In his youth the Third was known as "The Professor" (プロフェッサー, Purofessā^?), as he purportedly knew every jutsu in Konohagakure. He was also the teacher of Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. Orochimaru had always been his favorite student, and the Third could never bring himself to recognize Orochimaru's evil qualities. When Orochimaru invades Konoha years later, the Third fights him to repent for never prosecuting Orochimaru as he should have.^[123] When he is unable to win, the Third robs Orochimaru of his ability to use jutsu, bringing an end to the invasion and thus allowing him to die happy.^[72] In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Hidekatsu Shibata, and his English voice actor is Steve Kramer.^[124]^[125]

Minato Namikaze

Minato Namikaze (波風ミナト, Namikaze Minato^?), the Fourth Hokage (四代目火影, Yondaime Hokage^?), is the father of Naruto Uzumaki. Although Naruto and Minato are noted to have a number of similar traits throughout the series, their familial relationship is not revealed until Part II of the series.^[126] He was the student of Jiraiya and the teacher of Kakashi Hatake. Minato was a prodigy among ninja, such that enemy villages issued flee-on-sight orders if ever he appeared on a battlefield. He developed a jutsu that was in essence a teleportation jutsu, allowing him to wipe out whole armies in the blink of an eye, thus earning him the title of "Konoha's Yellow Flash" (木ノ葉の黄色い閃光, Konoha no Kiiroi Senkō^?).^[127] Before the start of the series, he gave his life to seal the nine-tailed demon fox into Naruto's body, saving Konoha from destruction and giving Naruto access to its great strength.^[122]

Tsunade

Tsunade (綱手^?), as well as her former teammates Jiraiya and Orochimaru, is a former student of the Third Hokage.^[33] She is also the granddaughter of the First Hokage and grand niece to the Second Hokage, and so many characters in the series refer to her with the Japanese honorific "hime" (meaning "princess"). Despite her connections to past Hokage, Tsunade hates the position when she is first introduced. After her brother and boyfriend died in pursuit of their dreams to become Hokage, she lost faith in the title and the concept of dreams. She regains her faith in both after meeting Naruto Uzumaki, who consistently overcomes any obstacle in his own dreams of being Hokage.^[53] As a result, Tsunade accepts the position of Fifth Hokage (五代目火影, Godaime Hokage^?) to protect Konohagakure.^[128] Despite the importance of her position, Tsunade tends to avoid her duties, instead leaving them for her assistants. She will fulfill her role to address matters important to the village, and throughout Part II leads Konoha in combating Akatsuki.^[36]

Akamaru (èµ¤ä¸¸^?) is Kiba Inuzuka's ninja dog (å¿�çŠ¬, ninken^?), best friend, and constant companion. At the start of the series, Kiba carries Akamaru around on his head or inside his jacket. By Part II of the Naruto storyline, Akamaru grows large enough for Kiba to ride atop his back, but since Kiba spends so much time with Akamaru, he fails to notice this drastic difference.^[49] With his heightened sense of smell, hearing, and the ability to detect others' chakra levels, Akamaru acts as a valuable tool for Kiba in hostile situations.^[50] To help Kiba keep track of opponents, Akamaru can urinate on them, giving them a strong odor that can easily be tracked. In battle, however, he relies on Kiba to provide the chakra for the combination jutsu they execute, which requires Akamaru to transform into a clone of Kiba.^[51] In the original Japanese anime, Akamaru is voiced by Junko Takeuchi, who is also the seiyÅ« for Naruto Uzumaki, and KÅ�suke Toriumi, who voices Kiba, when Akamaru transforms into a clone of Kiba.^[47]^[15] In the English adaptation of the anime, he is voiced by Jamie Simone, but when Akamaru transforms, he is voiced by Kyle Hebert, who additionally acts as Kiba's voice actor.

Kiba Inuzuka (çŠ¬å¡š ã‚ãƒ, Inuzuka Kiba^?) is a member of Team 8 characterized by a number of dog-like traits, including being very protective of his teammates and enjoying any food he can chew on.^[43] Most apparent of his connection to dogs is the constant presence of his ninja dog (å¿çŠ¬, ninken^?), Akamaru. Kiba is fiercely loyal to Akamaru, unwilling to abandon him and putting himself in harm's way for Akamaru's sake.^[44] In exchange for Kiba's devotion, Akamaru fights with him in battle; he uses his heightened senses to Kiba's advantage, and helps to double-team opponents with volleys of physical attacks. Orochimaru (大蛇丸^?) is a fictional character from the Naruto universe created by Masashi Kishimoto and developed into a media franchise, which consists of a series of manga, anime, soundtracks, OVAs, movies, video games, and other collectibles. He was created as one of the series' main antagonists, and intended to represent the opposite of the protagonists' morals and values.^[11]
In the anime and manga, Orochimaru is a former ninja of the village of Konohagakure, and leads his own ninja village, Otogakure, in hopes of destroying his former home. During his time in Konohagakure, Orochimaru distinguished himself as one of the village's most powerful ninja; however, his desire for power led him to obtain a means for immortality by transferring between different host bodies. This desire for a host is one of his driving motivations throughout the series, resulting in his desire to acquire Sasuke Uchiha due to his powerful genetic heritage. Orochimaru has appeared in media outside the Naruto anime and manga, including several video games.

Several anime and manga publications have praised and criticized Orochimaru's character. As one of the series' premier villains, he has been praised in this regard; IGN compared his character to Darth Vader of Star Wars fame.^[12] His lack of redeeming qualities and open malevolence was also praised by reviewers, with Mania.com calling him the "first real villain" of the series.^[13] Among the Naruto reader base, Orochimaru has been popular, ranking within the top twenty characters in several polls.^[14] Numerous pieces of merchandise in Orochimaru's likeness have also been released, including action figures and plush dolls.^[15]^[16]

This is a list of episodes of the anime series Naruto: Shippuden. The episodes are directed by Hayato Date and produced by Studio Pierrot and TV Tokyo. They are based on Part II of the Naruto manga series by Masashi Kishimoto. Naruto: Shippuden is a continuation of the Naruto manga series by Kishimoto, and continues the same storyline after the passing of two and a half years in the fictional Naruto universe. The episodes began airing on February 15, 2007 and have all been shown on TV Tokyo in Japan.^[1] Starting on January 2, 2009 Viz Media will begin providing eight subtitled Naruto: Shippuden episodes on the official Naruto website every week until it has caught up to the Japanese anime. Also, beginning January 15, 2009, Viz will start providing subtitled versions of the latest Naruto: Shippuden episodes days after they first air in Japan, with a new episode being added to the Naruto website each subsequent Thursday.^[2]

Twelve pieces of theme music are used for the episodes; four opening themes and eight ending themes. Naruto The Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (大活劇! 雪姫忍法帖だってばよ!! Daikatsugeki! Yukihime Ninpōchō dattebayo!!?, lit. Great Action Scene! Snow Princess's Book of Ninja Arts) is a 2004 film directed by Tensai Okamura and written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa based on the popular anime and manga series Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. It was released in Japan on August 21, 2004. The popularity of the series has spawned several sequels, beginning with Naruto the Movie 2. The movie was released on DVD on April 28, 2005. The film chronologically takes place either right before episode 101, or right after it, though events in the film leave its exact place in the series continuity questionable. The ending song is called Home Sweet Home and is sung by Yuki. The English version replaced this song with "Never Give Up" by Jeremy Sweet due to licensing restrictions.

As a bonus, the short and non-canonical OVA Konoha Annual Sports Festival (木ノ葉運動会 Konoha Undōkai) was included with the Japanese release of the film. The ten minute opening short revolves around Naruto's inability to use the bathroom while participating in a sports tournament. It is notable because virtually every character, living or dead, in the Naruto universe makes an appearance in it (most of them standing in a restroom-queue). The dead 4th Hokage also makes an appearance in the shot.

In America, the film was released as a one-day showing on June 6, 2007. Instead of the OVA included with the Japanese release, the American release included a short featurette entitled "World of Naruto", as well as a behind the scenes featurette afterwards with interviews with the main English cast and select members of the main Japanese cast. The OVA will, however, appear in the U.S. DVD release. The DVD release is set for September 4, 2007. The movie premiered on Cartoon Network on September 8, 2007. The film also played at Cineplex Odeon and Empire Theatres cinemas in Canada, distributed via Bell TV to play the film at all cinemas at the same time. The film aired at the Great British Museum in London, U.K. on July 28, 2007 for a single showing. The film was also slated for one-day showings in Australia on October 14.

On November 13, 2007, a 3-Disc Deluxe Edition of Naruto the Movie was released in the United States. It has many extras and features that the standard U.S. DVD , released a few months earlier, did not include. It includes the ten-minute short "Konoha Annual Sports Festival" that was originally shown with the Japanese release of the film, the complete soundtrack to the movie, documentaries of the American voice recording of the movie, movie art postcards, and more.

The movie begins with a heroine previously unknown in the Naruto continuity: Princess Fuun (Princess Gale in the US version). Fuun's nemesis, Mao, challenges her group with an army of undead soldiers. His dark intentions seem to prevail, that is, until Princess Gale and her cohorts, Shishimaru, Brit, and Tsukuyaku, unleash the power of the Seven-Color-Chakra upon him. They save the day, and Naruto, watching from afar, couldn't be more elated.

As it turns out, Naruto is actually watching the scene in a movie, as is the rest of Team 7. But then, the audience of the movie starts to throw objects at the team for making so much noise while arguing with the cinema manager. Kakashi had sent them to watch it as preparation for their next mission: guarding Yukie Fujikaze, the actress who plays Princess Fuun, while she makes the next movie in the Land of Snow. As it turns out, Yukie is actually the princess of the Land of Snow, which was taken over by rogue ninja when she was a child. The leader of the rogue ninja, Doto Kazahana, wants Yukie's crystal necklace to unlock the Land of Snow's treasure, which Yukie's father had hidden before being assassinated. After various battles between Team 7 and the rogue ninja, resulting in the defeat of all and the death of Nadare their leader, Doto succeeds in obtaining Yukie's necklace, only to discover that the "treasure" of the Land of Snow is a generator designed to melt the snow and bring Spring to the country. Doto is then defeated by Naruto in a manner reminicient of Princess Fuun's defeat of Mao, involving "rainbow chakra".

With the rogue ninja all gone, Yukie has decided to resume her position as the princess of the Land of Snow, which will eventually become the Land of Spring after the technology behind the generator is perfected. Despite being a princess, Yukie intends to continue acting, and the next film she's starring in is an adaptation of one of Jiraiya's Icha Icha novels,(Makeout Paradise: The Movie) much to Kakashi's delight, who says "That script! She's perfect!" (This was actually seen on episode 101, Kakashi staring amazed at a billboard advertisement of the movie). Apparently, the autograph-wanting Naruto received an envelope from Sasuke afterwards, who got shocked looks from the other members of Team 7, including Naruto himself. Inside was a signed picture from Yukie. The picture was of a bandaged up (and apparently unconscious) Naruto in the hospital, receiving a kiss on the cheek from the actress. At the end of the credits, the crew that make the Princess Gale movie say cut and all cheer. At box office the movie was a huge hit, making $42,134,123 US.

Naruto Shippūden 2: Bonds (劇場版 NARUTO−ナルト− 疾風伝絆 Gekijōban Naruto Shippūden: Kizuna?)[1] is the fifth overall Naruto film and second Naruto: Shippūden film, based on the popular anime and manga series, which was released on August 2, 2008. The movie was announced in Weekly Shōnen Jump along with the DVD release date for the first movie. Additionally, the teaser trailer for the second movie was aired with Naruto: Shippūden episode(s) 40-41 and again with episode 66-67. In episodes 70-73 opening sequence was replaced with footage from movie. The theme song for the movie is "No Rain No Rainbow" by Home Made Kazoku.

A mysterious goup of shinobi called the Sora-nin (lit. Sky People) from the Sky Country makes a surprise attack on Konoha because Konoha nearly destroyed the Sky Country during the last Shinobi World War, but they survived and now they're after Konoha and the Fire Country for revenge.

The group starts attacking Konoha, causing mass mayhem. Flying ninjas come out with winged-mechanical devices bombarding. A boy comes all the way to inform Konoha that his village had been attacked and he was looking for his sensei, who was currently in Konoha looking for someone to go with him to heal those injured in his village.

A 3 man team consisting of Naruto, Sakura and Hinata are sent along to help the boy's village. They accompany Amaru, the boy, and Shinnō, his sensei, back to the village. The team travels through a forest full of eerie beasts and poisonous animals using small rowing boats down a river. A Sora-Nin suddenly appears and they hide by the riverside while Naruto and Amaru hide underwater until the Sora-Nin go away. When they try to resurface, Amaru gets caught in the weeds underwater and loses his precious scalpel (a present from his beloved sensei). While helping Amaru with the weeds, Naruto notices that Amaru is in fact a "she" due to her breasts present. Naruto blushes while at the same time a poisonous piranha-like fish bites him and he faints. Later on, Naruto wakes up, still blushing, because Amaru was sucking the poisonous blood out of the wound on his thigh, thus saving Naruto. Naruto asks her if he's a "she" and suggests that Amaru has feelings for her sensei, causing him to get slapped.

Meanwhile in Konoha, the Sora-nin retreat because they were out of chakra to maintain flying, so Konoha sends another special team to look for their base. Sai approaches the ship's captain (who is near the beach) on one of his ink birds to attract attention while Shikamaru and Kakashi hide behind some rocks near the shore waiting for the right time to infiltrate and attack. In Orochimaru's lair, Orochimaru is now ill because the body transfer jutsu he uses is close to expiration. Kabuto is attending to him and tells Sasuke that the Sora-nin are attacking Konoha, to which Sasuke gives an "I don't care" reply. Orochimaru orders Sasuke to get a man who is able to help him perfect his reincarnation jutsu.

Naruto and company finally reach Amaru's village and find the village has been badly attacked and some parts are now in ruins with the inhabitants nowhere to be seen. Amaru cries and runs around trying to find some villagers. She unknowingly triggers a trap, sending a bunch of kunai flying towards her; her sensei, Shinnō, steps in and tries to protect her but fails. Naruto, Sakura and Hinata run to the scene but it was too late, Shinnō dies. After Amaru comes to her senses they continue to look for villagers. Sasuke is on his way to the village.

Later on, through a series of events, Hinata gets separated from Sakura and Naruto. Naruto and Sakura find themselves in front of an evil monster that feeds on the darkness of human souls and somehow takes over Amaru. Sakura proves to be no match for the beast; the creature senses that Naruto has a huge dark energy/power inside of him so it taunts Naruto and tries to make him use that power, saying "He cannot save anyone without it." This makes Naruto remember his failure in saving Sasuke and is emotionally unstable, causing him to take on the Nine Tailed Fox form and, eventually, the four-tails state. After fighting for a while he turns back to normal when Sakura gains consciousness and gives Naruto the seal which Jiraiya gave to her earlier.

Naruto tells Amaru to ignore the darkness in her heart which finally results in the beast getting defeated. Sakura wakes up in Naruto's arms and punches him - awkwardly. They decided to separate; Naruto going on to look for the villagers and Hinata and Sakura going back to get help. Amaru, who was supposed to go with Sakura stays to help Naruto. They then find some old ruins in which Shinnō mentioned earlier. They decide to enter the ruins. Shinnō is inside - safe and sound saying something about conquering the world with the power of darkness. Amaru, excited that her sensei is alive runs to hug him, but Naruto notices something's not right and Shinnō laughs at Amaru for trusting him. Shinnō mentions that he's been researching the power of darkness for about 10 years and he's finally found it in Konoha; now he only needs a secret scroll. He then transforms into a huge hulk-like creature with Naruto charging towards him only to be outmatched again and again.

Shinnō, in the hulk-like form, also tries to convince Naruto to use the Nine Tailed Fox's chakra. Amaru is lost in tears while Shinnō and Naruto duke it out. Ever since she was small she had a weird illness and nobody liked her, fearing that they'd be infected. Only Shinnō cared for her and managed to cure her. Naruto tells her not to throw her feelings away while evil Shinnō mocks her. She finally admits her love to which Shinnō pauses, distracting him, allowing Naruto to land a hit. Sasuke appears suddenly saying "Orochimaru needs help with a reincarnation jutsu" to Shinnō. Shinnō gives him a scroll and says "that's enough help". Sasuke attacks with "Chidori Senbon" which attacks Shinnō's cells and he turns back to normal. He then flees the scene and Sasuke follows. Naruto tells Amaru to go find the villagers while he goes after Sasuke. He finds Sasuke in a room and asks "What are you doing here?". In the same room is a giant cocoon which is absorbing dark chakra, Shinnō fuses with the cocoon and transforms into a monster. Using tentacle arms Shinnō tries to absorb their chakra; Sasuke turns to Curse Seal level 1 and releases evil chakra and Naruto, who got Sasuke's plan, turns into the Kyuubi, also releasing evil chakra.

In the meantime, Sai and Co. successfully infiltrate and destroy the Sora-nin's base. Sakura and Hinata find the villagers in a cell and frees them all. Naruto appears again and orders Amaru to go. She refuses and Sasuke takes her by force. Naruto whispers something to Sasuke, who then flees. Remembering Jiraiya once said that Naruto had the willpower to never give up, he creates some shadow clones and starts to destroy the ruins. When all was destroyed he begins to fall. Amaru, from a distance sees Naruto and grabs a pair of sora-nin wings and tries to save him. Upon reaching him, she grabs him and they fall together. Jiraiya suddenly pops out with Gamakichi and catches the two, saving them.

Later on, Naruto wakes up in Amaru's arms, which causes Sakura and Hinata to get jealous. Sasuke goes back and gives Orochimaru the scroll, who then asks if something has happened. Sasuke then goes off to train and remembers Naruto's whisper "I'll definitely bring you back to Konoha. Sasuke!"

Kakashi Hatake (はたけカカシ, Hatake Kakashi^?) is the leader of Team 7 and the sensei of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Kishimoto had originally intended for Kakashi to be introduced earlier in the series than he actually was, and created him as an easygoing person that would be able to keep the members of Team 7 in check.^[8] Kakashi treats his leadership position with a detached manner, and is consistently late to meetings as a result. In a gaiden on Kakashi's past, this is shown to be the result of an incident in which he witnessed the death of one of his teammates, Obito Uchiha, who gave Kakashi his Sharingan eye and imparted many of his habits, including his tardiness.^[27] With Obito's Sharingan, Kakashi has amassed a reputation as a skilled and powerful ninja, earning the moniker "Copy Ninja Kakashi" (コピー忍者のカカシ, Kopī Ninja no Kakashi^?).^[28] Although he mentors all three members of Team 7 early in the series, he particularly concentrates on training Sasuke as the series continues, teaching him his Chidori technique; however, he is unable to prevent Sasuke from leaving the village to seek Orochimaru for greater power. Sakura Haruno (春野サクラ, Haruno Sakura^?) is the sole female member of Team 7. Kishimoto created her as the heroine of the series, although he has admitted that he has little perception of what an ideal heroine should be.^[1] As a child, Sakura was taunted by other children, particularly because of her large forehead, a feature Kishimoto has tried to emphasize in Sakura's appearances. She was comforted by Ino Yamanaka.^[21] As the two continued to grow, however, they became increasingly distant due to their shared affection for Sasuke Uchiha. During most of Part I, Sakura is infatuated with Sasuke, and spurns the advances of Naruto Uzumaki.^[22] After Sasuke leaves the village, she resolves to become stronger by training with Tsunade. Sasuke Uchiha (うちはサスケ, Uchiha Sasuke^?) is one of the members of Team 7. He was created to be a rival to Naruto, as well as a "cool genius", which Kishimoto believed was an integral part of an ideal rivalry.^[1] He is one of the few remaining members of the Uchiha clan along with his brother, Itachi Uchiha, who killed the rest of their family.^[17] Due to this, Sasuke's sole desire is to kill his brother, and he develops a cold and withdrawn personality. Naruto Uzumaki (う, Uzumaki Naruto^?) is the primary protagonist of the Naruto series. Creation and conception

When Masashi Kishimoto was originally creating the Naruto series, he looked to other shōnen manga for influences while attempting to make his characters as unique as possible.^[2] Kishimoto cites Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series as one of these influences, noting that Son Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball, was a key factor when creating Naruto Uzumaki due to his energetic and mischievous personality.^[7] To complement Naruto, Kishimoto worked on creating a rival that was a "cool genius", as he believed this was "the archetypal rival character". After reviewing different manga for ideas, he ultimately developed Sasuke Uchiha. When creating the primary heroine, Kishimoto admitted, "I don't have a definite image of what a heroine should be". He eventually created Sakura Haruno, emphasizing "her energy and flirtatious spirit" as her primary characteristics. These three characters would be the mold for the other three main Naruto teams.^[1]

The separation of the characters into different teams was intended to give each group a specific flavor. Kishimoto wished for each team member to be "extreme", having a high amount of aptitude in one given attribute, yet talentless in another. This approach was used to make each team perform best when individual members worked together to overcome their weaknesses. Having watched tokusatsu dramas as a child, Kishimoto wished for his teams to be different from the superhero teams in these dramas, dismissing the value of a team in which all the teammates were "strong to the point of perfection". Kishimoto notes that the different roles the characters assume is similar to many role-playing games, and "each character stands out better that way".^[8]

Kishimoto inserted villains into the story to counteract the lead characters' moral values. He stated that this focus on illustrating the difference in values is central to his creation of villains to the point that, "I don't really think about them in combat". The villains' physical appearances were also embellished in order to differentiate them from other characters, making it easier for a reader to follow the story and identify the villains, even in heated battle scenes. Kishimoto noted that making the villains "flamboyant" with a "showy costume" is "one of my guiding principles", as well as making them "more memorable".^[9]

When drawing the characters, Kishimoto consistently follows a five-step process: concept and rough sketch, drafting, inking, shading, and coloring. These steps are followed when he is drawing the manga and making the color illustrations that commonly adorn the cover of tankōbon, the cover of the Weekly Shōnen Jump, or other media, but the toolkit he utilizes occasionally changes.^[10] For instance, he used an airbrush for one illustration for a Weekly Shōnen Jump cover, but decided not to use it for future drawings largely due to the cleanup required.^[11]

The Naruto storyline is divided into two parts, simply named Part I and Part II, with the latter taking place two-and-a-half years after the conclusion of Part I. The series' storyline follows the adventures of a group of young ninja from the village of Konohagakure.

The major characters of the series during Part I

The titular character of the series is Naruto Uzumaki, an energetic ninja who wishes to become Hokage, the leader of Konohagakure. During the early part of the series, he is assigned to Team 7, during which he meets Sasuke Uchiha, a taciturn and highly skilled "genius" of the Uchiha clan; Sakura Sena, who is infatuated with Sasuke yet has Naruto's affection; and Kakashi Hatake, the quiet and mysterious leader of the team. Over the course of the series, Naruto interacts with and befriends several of his fellow ninja in Konohagakure as well as other villages. He also encounters the series' antagonists, including Orochimaru, a former ninja of Konohagakure scheming to destroy his former home, and the elite ninja of the criminal organization Akatsuki.

Naruto has a large number of characters, in which most of them are distinguished for being ninjas. They initially study at the Ninja Academy, where the story begins, are split up into squads of three after their graduation and become Genin, rookie ninja. Each squad is assigned an experienced sensei.[1] These core squads form a basis for the characters' interactions later in the series, where characters are chosen for missions for their team's strength and complementary skills; Naruto's squad 7 becomes the social frame where Naruto is acquainted with Sasuke, Sakura, and their sensei Kakashi, forming the core of his world-in-the-making.[2] The other three-man teams of his former classmates form another such layer, as Naruto connects with them to various degrees, learning of their motives, vulnerabilities, and aspirations, often relating them to his own. The groups of three are not limited to the comrades Naruto's age – groups in the story in general come in threes and multiples of three with very few exceptions.

Naruto Uzumaki is a young boy who has the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed within him. Twelve years before the start of the series, the fox attacked the ninja village Konohagakure, slaughtering many people. As such, the leader of Konohagakure – the Fourth Hokage – sacrificed his own life to seal the demon inside Naruto when he was a newborn. Konohagakure, however, regarded Naruto as if he were the demon fox itself and mistreated him throughout most of his childhood. A decree made by the Third Hokage forbade anyone mention the attack of the demon fox to anyone although Naruto soon realized about this. Years later, Naruto graduated from the Ninja Academy by using his Shadow Clone Technique, a technique from a forbidden scroll that he was tricked into stealing, to save his teacher, Iruka Umino, from the renegade ninja Mizuki. That encounter gave Naruto two insights: that he was the container of the demon fox, and that there was someone besides the Third Hokage who actually cared for and acknowledged him.

The main story follows Naruto and his friends' personal growth and development as ninja, and emphasizes their interactions with each other and the influence of their backgrounds on their personalities. Naruto finds two friends and comrades in Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Sena, two fellow young ninja who are assigned with him to form a three-person team under an experienced sensei named Kakashi Hatake. Naruto also confides in other characters that he meets throughout the series as well. They learn new abilities, get to know each other and other villagers better, and experience a coming-of-age journey as Naruto dreams of becoming the Hokage of Konohagakure. Throughout all of the Naruto plot, strong emphasis on character development changes the plot, with very few things happening because of chance. At first, emphasis is placed on Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, who are the members of Team 7. Later, Orochimaru, a criminal at the top of Konoha's most wanted list, attacks Konoha killing the Third Hokage as an act of revenge. He also desires to acquire Sasuke Uchiha due to his powerful genetic heritage. Believing Orochimaru will be able to give him the strength needed to kill his brother Itachi, who destroyed all his clan, he goes to him. Naruto does not give up on Sasuke, leaving Konoha for two-and-a-half years of training to prepare himself for the next time he meets Sasuke. After the training period, a mysterious organization called Akatsuki attempts to capture the nine powerful tailed beasts including the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox that is sealed inside of Naruto. Several ninjas from Konoha, including Team 7, fight against the Akatsuki members as well as Team 7 search for their teammate Sasuke.

Naruto (NARUTO—III—? romanized as NARUTO in Japan) is an ongoing Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto with an anime adaptation. The plot tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, a loud, hyperactive, unpredictable, adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become a Hokage, the ninja in his village that is acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all. The series is based on a one-shot that Kishimoto first authored in the August 1997 issue of Akamaru Jump.

The manga was first published by Shueisha in 1999 in the 43rd issue of Japan's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine and it is still being released with forty-four volumes. The manga would be later adapted into an anime produced by Studio Pierrot and Aniplex. It premiered across Japan on the terrestrial TV Tokyo network and the anime satellite television network Animax on October 3, 2002. The first series lasted nine seasons, while Naruto: Shippūden, a sequel of the series, began its first on February 15, 2007 and is still airing. Apart from anime series, Studio Pierrot has developed five movies for the series and several original video animation (OVAs). Other pieces of merchanidise include light novels, video games and trading cards developed by several companies.

Viz Media has licensed the manga and anime for North American production. Viz has been publishing the series in their Shonen Jump magazine, and has also been releasing the volumes with some of them within campaigns. The Naruto anime debuted in the United States on Cartoon Network's Toonami programming block on September 10, 2005, and in Canada on YTV's Bionix on September 16, 2005. Naruto began showing in the United Kingdom on Jetix on July 22, 2006. It began showing on Toasted TV on January 12, 2007, in Australia, which features the Manga Entertainment TV version and the German-language. Naruto: Shippūden has also been announced to premier in 2009 in the United States.
